With great delight, our next part in Monument Recordings belongs to Laura MRLS and their recorded set from Subverted event in October 2022 at ://about blank in Berlin. Faithful to their most beloved combinations and approaches, Laura projects a beautiful blend of eerie, cold cinemascopic terrains with straightforward, banging layers atop an ever-reforming, industrialistic canvas. Even so, strikes of hypnotic techno turbulence constantly lurk and swirl over with their thunderous steps, transmitting intense and entangling energy currents. In short, this selection builds its flow elegantly through a twisted variation, which Laura heavily invests in while keeping their style refined and unbridled.
Laura MRLS experiments with a variety of different genres, portraying sounds from atmospheric, hypnotic, to industrialesque and harsh elements. The Helsinki-based artist has been focusing on dark sound valleys that, besides techno, nowadays also reach into cinematic ambient, distorted electronic and contemporary classical music. Besides being resident artist at Monument, Laura MRLS is also co-founder of the multi-sensory event series SYNAĒ and hosts a new monthly radio show, called Affine Dark Science, on IDA Radio Helsinki.

SUBVERTED is a queer trans-led label and event series focusing on dark industrial techno with noise, drone, EBM, and hypnotic influences.
They curate queer sex-positive parties with equally queer line-ups, featuring mostly non-binary and trans DJs. Basically, the aim is to highlight artists with gender identities that are under-represented in the music industry, showing that it is possible to have more inclusive and diverse booking practices without a decrease in musical quality. In fact, by bringing new and previously unheard perspectives to the dance floor, this will increase quality.
Above all, discovering and nurturing new talent is at the very essence of SUBVERTED. At the same time, they stand in resistance to the homogenisation and sanitisation to which the techno industry has been subjected in recent years via formulaic, easily-digested productions and repetitive line-ups. Overall, the intention is to continue opening the industry’s gates for a new generation of artists that are pushing their own unique and fresh take on dark industrial techno.
