After much anticipation, Charles Green has arrived at Monument to deliver his mix full of hot new techno, including from his own latest EP Soul Figures.
This year it will have been a whole decade since Charles Green first stepped up to the decks. Charles’ first ever EP, Soul Figures, is only the third release so far on Four Triangles. The label, headed by ASOK, is set to become a go-to for global DJs; the mission statement behind it is to showcase the best new talent. Between throwing South East heavyweight parties as one of the founders of First Floor, and residencies at Patterns and London’s Corsica, Charles Green has had a lot on his hands while developing his first batch of tracks for this EP.
The EP hints Green’s taste for structures and rhythms that belong in small, dark, basement dancefloors – something the UK has a lot of. Gamma Rays and X200 take UK rave and contextualise it for the modern techno melting pot. The majority of the sounds come from the Roland TR-8, paired with an Elektron Octatrack and Electron Analog Four. The JV 1080 is a main feature on Gamma Rays:
Charles’ podcast for Monument is built on diversity of sound and style, in a way that is completely cohesive. The mix makes the extent of influences on the EP intelligible and, perhaps more importantly, logical.
Though to some he might be a new name, Green has been rubbing shoulders with international DJs as part of the First Floor Sound crew bringing Palms Trax, Function, Vril and the Zenker brothers to the southeast. With his cohort Cathal they’ve been making waves for a while. Charles Green is set to take a much larger stage with Soul Figures as his first entry.
